HEREDITARY (2018) - Movie Review

June 10, 2018

Hereditary follows Annie Graham ( Toni Collette ) and her family after the death of Annie's mother. Strange events begin to occur around the house the same time feelings of pain, grief, and loss come to the surface. I don't want to spoil any of the movie's story from there, I think that's something best experienced as blind as possible. I do highly recommend the movie though, just don't expect your typical jump-scare fest. This movie is a slow burn character driven piece that will likely stay in your mind long after it ends.

The acting, music, visuals, and especially cinematography are great. The cinematography is honestly some of the best I've ever seen in a horror film period and is a real joy to watch. The actors all play their characters and their dynamics in the film to a high quality level, many people already think Collette might be in for a Oscar nod in the future. The grief and loss parts of the film are done so well that for most of the film I was emotionally exhausted in a way a horror film has never affected me. It was certainty unique feeling that exhaustion and dealing with the increasing dread and uncertainty of the film's horror elements that are very solid. Besides one or two minor nitpicks that are really more like story questions I don't have any negatives to talk about.

I do believe that Hereditary will be this years best horror film, pending more reflecting in the future I might even say it's my favorite horror film from the year 2000 onward.
